Luca Scatà, the police officer who stopped Anis Amri, the terrorist who carried out a massacre at the Christmas markets in Berlin, has died .
The policeman died after a long illness, he was just 35 years old . The announcement was made by Roberto Di Stefano, mayor of Sesto San Giovanni (Milan): «With profound sadness I learn of the passing of Luca Scatà, the agent of the Sesto San Giovanni police station who courageously stopped the Berlin terrorist in 2016 , Anis Amri, in Piazza I Maggio, receiving the medal for Civil Valor. His loss at just 35 years old, due to cancer, leaves us with a great void. My deepest condolences to his family, colleagues and all the State Police. Luca, your courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten. Rest in peace".
The attack on the Berlin Christmas markets took place on 19 December 2016: Anis Amri drove a truck into the crowd, hit and killed 12 people, injuring more than 50 . The attack was claimed by ISIS.
The Tunisian terrorist, wanted throughout Europe, then fled to France, passing through Turin and arriving in Sesto San Giovanni, where he engaged in a firefight on 23 December. Stopped during a roadside check by two officers - Luca Scatà and Christian Movio - at 3 am, he pulled out a gun and shot Movio, wounding him in the shoulder. But he was immediately shot and killed by Scatà , who was later awarded the medal for civil valor.
