Alarm in Ostia Antica for an outbreak of avian flu in a poultry farm.

The Lazio Region has ordered, with an order signed by President Nicola Zingaretti, a "protection zone with a radius of 3 kilometers from the breeding site of the outbreak and a surveillance zone with a radius of 10 kilometers".

About 35 small farms are affected by the ordinance. "It is a serious strain - explained Zingaretti - it is a fact of some importance and for this reason we intervened in a very timely and rapid manner with very rigorous interventions. Obviously there is not daily but ad horam monitoring of the situation".

For Zingaretti it is "proof that controls are needed and work. It was very important to intervene immediately," he said. The regional councilor for health, Alessio D'Amato, assured that "the situation is under control but there will be, from the next few hours, a task force that will have to implement the strict measures of the ordinance to which there can be no exceptions".

The avian outbreak emerged from checks carried out for abnormal mortality in non-commercial poultry farming. A case of virus was thus detected from the bird samples. "The report of the national reference center of the Zooprophylactic Institute confirms the onset of an outbreak of subtype H5 HPAI avian influenza", announced the Department of Health. So the regional ordinance was immediately ordered to adopt "extraordinary measures".

Establish "a protection area with a radius of 3 km from the breeding site of the influenza outbreak and a surveillance area with a radius of 10 km. All farms must be checked". Entry and exit from a poultry farm, other captive birds or other domestic mammals are not permitted without the veterinarian's authorization. Anyone entering or leaving a farm must comply with appropriate biosecurity measures, all carcasses of dead birds are immediately destroyed, vehicles and equipment used to transport poultry are subjected to disinfestation procedures without delay, as are all vehicles used by staff. or by other people ".

Anyone who does not respect the provision risks being reported.
