He had been in a deep coma for five years following cosmetic surgery and on Saturday his heart stopped beating. For the death of Mariolina Vargiu, 65-year-old originally from Villacidro and resident in Cessalto, in the Treviso area, two doctors are being investigated for manslaughter and the public prosecutor has ordered an autopsy.

Mariolina had undergone breast and eyelid surgery in an aesthetic clinic in Spresiano, with the day-surgery modality. It was November 28, 2016. Arrived alone, the risks of the operation were apparently so low. From what was reconstructed by the Nas of Treviso, she would have been given too high a dose of anesthetic and instead of waking up she had lost consciousness. Once the emergency was triggered, she had been transferred to the hospital where, however, she had already arrived in a coma.

The confirmed brain damage was so devastating that the woman had lost self-sufficiency and the family had had to admit her to a facility.

The 65-year-old, married and with two children, had been in a vegetative state ever since.
