The alleged smuggler who on 25 January last transported 287 illegal immigrants to Italy, mainly Bengali, from the Libyan coast to Italy with a boat of about 16 meters was identified and arrested. Along the journey, carried out putting migrants in grave danger, seven had died from inhumane conditions and hypothermia.

Reached by the detention order, carried out last night by the Agrigento State Police, he is an Egyptian citizen held responsible for crimes relating to illegal immigration and is also charged with the crime of death as a consequence of another crime. A definitive sentence had already been issued against the 38-year-old for aiding and abetting illegal immigration committed in September 2011 in Pozzallo.

The agents of the Flying Squad then executed two prison orders against as many Tunisian citizens, who arrived illegally in the State, the first convicted of crimes of sexual violence, persecutory acts, threats; the other for forgery against public faith.
