Bitter surprise for a man living in Sondrio . Lorenzo, born in 1971, found the considerable sum of 161 million old lire, in banknotes of various denominations, in an old chest inherited from his grandmother . But the Bank of Italy, as it then explained, since more than ten years have passed since the Euro came into circulation in our country (it was the year 2002), does not intend to change the millions of lire into thousands of euros.
The news was reported by the consumer association Giustitalia , which also deals with the reimbursement of postal vouchers and government bonds at a national and international level and with the lira/euro conversion, which the man turned to to obtain justice.
Lorenzo, a temporary employee of a call center, initially contacted the Bank of Italy to ask for information on making the change but was told that it was no longer possible. So he turned to Giustitalia's lawyers.
According to Giustitalia, if currently in Italy there is an ordinary ten-year prescription for the exercise of credit rights (as Bankitalia claims), a prescription which however does not exist in all the other countries of the European Union where it is still possible to "exchange" l 'former national currency, "it is equally true that the initial ten-year period starts from when the subject can assert his right, therefore in this case from the date of discovery of the banknotes, which dates back only a few days ago".
