The final act of the evidentiary hearing into the murder of Chiara Poggi, killed on August 13, 2007, in Garlasco, is underway in the Pavia courtroom . The courtroom, as usual, is packed with journalists and television crews.
At the center of the discussion, experts are discussing the traces of male DNA found under the victim's fingernails.
According to the advice of the Pavia Public Prosecutor's Office and the investigating judge Denise Albani , the genetic profile would be compatible with that of Andrea Sempio or of the members of his paternal line.
Opinion on the expert report is divided. Sempio's lawyers, Angela Taccia and Liborio Calatiotti, have disputed the scientific reliability of the analyses, which are based on "unconsolidated" data from 2014.
The position of the defenders of Alberto Stasi, convicted of the murder, is different, and they consider the expert report further confirmation of the analyses of their own experts and of the compatibility of the DNA with Sempio or his family.
The hearing also included a discussion of other evidence, such as the so-called "trace 33" found on a wall , the admission of which had already been rejected twice by the prosecutor. Also discussed will be some of Sempio's phone calls to the victim's brother and the parking receipt, elements deemed significant by the prosecution.
The next step will potentially be a request for indictment . Alberto Stasi, on semi-liberty, cannot make statements, but can do so through his lawyers: "Stasi is interested in following the hearing," explained lawyer Antonio De Rensis, "and I'm pleased about that." Will he speak in court? "We don't know, the hearing hasn't started yet," the lawyer simply added.
