Heavy rain and strong winds are canceling summer in the North, where severe weather alerts are in effect . Orange warnings are in effect in Lombardy and Piedmont, yellow warnings in twelve regions.
Blame it on Erin the 'Terrible', the former hurricane turned extratropical cyclone, which with its cold currents coming from the Atlantic is causing numerous inconveniences, while the heat holds firm in the South.
Parks were closed in Milan, where 30 to 40 millimeters of rain fell in just a few hours, activating the Seveso River basin. Hundreds of emergency calls were received by the Fire Department in the province of Pavia , around forty in Brianza. Roads and underpasses were also flooded in the Varese area , while along the lakeside in Como , the SS 340 'Regina' state road was closed due to a landslide.
In Piedmont, where the Maddalena state road was closed for most of the day, 65 municipal operations centers were activated due to the severe weather affecting the Verbano area—where the San Bernardino stream reached critical levels—the Novarese, Valsesia, Biella, Val Chiusella, and the northern plains. Furthermore, 1,900 power outages occurred in the region, with peaks in the Vercelli area. Twenty-five people were evacuated in Baveno, in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region, due to a landslide in Romanico. Regional President Alberto Cirio urged residents to exercise caution and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, especially in mountainous areas.
Heavy rain also hit Liguria. A tornado and fallen trees on roads in Versilia, where gusts of wind pounded the coast with peaks of up to 100 km/h.
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the next few hours in Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Lazio, and then further south into Molise and Campania. The severe weather will ease on Sunday, but further deterioration is expected between Monday and Tuesday.
