Goodbye paper identity card, the old document from 3 August 2026 will no longer be considered valid for expatriation, regardless of the expiry date .

This is established by European regulation 1157/2019, which imposes more stringent security standards for recognition, in particular the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ), a section of alphanumeric text readable by scanners for rapid data verification. A technology that is equipped with the Electronic Identity Card (CIE), which at this point from 3 August 2026 becomes mandatory to go abroad .

To request it, you need to book an appointment at the registry office of the municipality of residence; you will need a recent passport photo, your tax code and your old paper identity card (or another identity document in the event of theft or loss of the latter).

By switching to the CIE, you can also access the online services of the public administration, with credentials considered more secure and advanced than those of the Spid.
