The 15-year-old accused of stabbing 35-year-old Malian Bakari Sako confessed to the murder, saying he was "deeply sorry." According to reports, during his spontaneous statements before Taranto Juvenile Court investigating judge Paola Morelli during the hearing to validate his arrest, the boy claimed he acted out of fear that his friends might be attacked.
The other three minors arrested also gave spontaneous statements, in which they reportedly declared that they did not notice that the 15-year-old had stabbed Bakari and that they did not notice that he was bleeding.
Shortly before the attack, at dawn on May 9th in Taranto's old town, there had been an argument with the victim in the square. The three minors, before the investigating judge, reportedly claimed they saw Bakari, who had begun filming them with his cell phone. At that point, they approached, and a fight ensued.
One of the minors allegedly claimed to have pushed Bakari, who in turn punched him in the face. They then chased him to the bar, where the 15-year-old allegedly stabbed him. Bakari managed to enter the bar, collapsing on the floor. One of the youths involved allegedly told his friends he was faking it. They then took him outside, throwing water in his face and trying to lift his legs. But there was nothing more they could do for Bakari.
