Life imprisonment with three months of solitary confinement .
This is the sentence issued by the judges of the Assize Court of Milan against Alessandro Impagnatiello, the former barman who killed his pregnant girlfriend Giulia Tramontano .
The Court, presided over by Judge Antonella Bertoja, made its decision after approximately two and a half hours of deliberation .
The former barman, present in the courtroom, did not make any spontaneous statements . Giulia's family members were also present at the reading of the verdict, including her mother Loredana Femiano, her father Franco, her sister Chiara and her brother Mario. They all burst into tears and hugged each other for a long time.
"This chaos she created is the opposite of what she would have wanted. She tiptoed into people's lives. She was rare: even when her heart was broken she thought of another woman who might have lived the same situation. She was present, but never loud. She was silent. When you are so sensitive in this violent world, you are prey for the lion. Giulia is all of this, a gentle soul," said her sister Chiara.
These are instead the words of Giulia's mother: " We have never spoken of revenge, revenge does not exist. We have lost a daughter, a grandchild, we have lost our life. I am no longer a mother, my husband is no longer a father, our children will be marked for life by this pain". "What we have lost - added the father Franco - we will never get back. Today we have not won, we have lost in everything".
"We have always considered life imprisonment the only possible sanction, both the investigations and the trial inevitably led to that epilogue ", said instead the lawyer Giovanni Cacciapuoti, civil party lawyer of the relatives of Giulia Tramontano.
Impagnatiello has been detained in San Vittore prison since June 2023. The judges excluded the only aggravating circumstance of futile motives from the charges. They did not recognize mitigating circumstances and maintained all the other aggravating circumstances, premeditation, cruelty and cohabitation relationship . The Court also recognized the formal concurrence between the murder and the other two charges of concealment of a corpse and non-consensual termination of pregnancy, applying in addition to the life sentence also 7 years of imprisonment for these last two crimes . The Court also sentenced Impagnatiello, impassive during the reading of the verdict alongside his lawyers , to compensate Giulia's father and mother with provisional amounts of 200 thousand euros each and the brother and sister of the victim with 150 thousand euros each.
Giulia was killed in the apartment they shared in Senago, in the Milan area, with 37 stab wounds, on the day she met with the other girl the 31-year-old barman was seeing . Impagnatiello, who had already tried to kill her with rat poison, attacked her, and once she was lifeless, he tried to burn her body and then hid it. He was found in a cavity near a garage four days later, while he, who had filed a missing person report, claimed she had left of her own free will.
A premeditated crime for the prosecutor of Milan Alessia Menegazzo and the addition Letizia Mannella. The two lawyers who defend the man, Giulia Geradini and Samanta Barbaglia, in their speech tried to refute that there was premeditation.
Forensic psychiatrist Pietro Ciliberti and medical examiner Gabriele Rocca, appointed by the Court of Assizes of Milan to carry out the psychiatric assessment on Impagnatiello, found narcissistic traits and no "sense of guilt", but established that he was capable of understanding and willing .
