Giovanni Cucchi, the father of Stefano Cucchi —the young man who died a week after being beaten in a Carabinieri station cell in 2009—and Ilaria, a senator for the AVS party, has died. He was 77 years old and had been ill for some time. Lawyer Fabio Anselmo confirmed the news of his death.
"Giovanni, with your voice you gave your son a voice. Thank you for your strength," the lawyer wrote on Instagram.
"There are words," his post continues, "that are never forgotten, that remain engraved even when the voices that uttered them die down. Unfortunately, as of today, Giovanni Cucchi, Stefano's father, is no longer with us." Anselmo also addresses those "many, too many" who "wrote and said that Giovanni didn't care about his son, that he had abandoned him, that Stefano was alone. " Words spoken "to justify the unjustifiable, to shatter a family already destroyed by grief." And to refute those claims, the lawyer publishes the letter Stefano Cucchi wrote to his father two years before his death, which the man read in court during one of the trials for his son's death. "Giovanni, as he read those lines in court, was trembling. His voice broke, but he didn't stop," Anselmo recalls in the post. " In that courtroom, you could hear the heavy silence of those who, for years, accused that family of indifference, shame, and hypocrisy. Those simple, human, clear words destroyed years of hatred, lies, and misdirection. "To those who wrote that Giovanni 'wasn't there.' To those who said he 'deserved it.' To those who still comment without knowing," Anselmo concludes, "read this letter. It is the voice of a son who loved his father. Of a boy who wanted to live, not die in a cell. Of a family that has never stopped being there."
