"I was shocked. I read all the reports suggesting my attitude was assertive or that there was an attempt to divert attention from the war in Iran. I can't say whether these reports are true, but I don't intend to fuel this debate. I think our bilateral work with the US needs to return to normal ."
This was stated by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the "Truth Day" initiative in Rome after the heated exchange with Donald Trump.
"Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani," she added in an interview with the newspaper's editor-in-chief Maurizio Belpietro, "was right to cancel the mission at that point, but once the message gets across, there's no need to go any further. The government will be present at the July 2nd meeting at Villa Taverna, because I'm not changing my mind: foreign policy will remain the same as it has been for the last 80 years; it's important to maintain a solid relationship between the US and Europe ."
On Hormuz: "We must lend a hand, both diplomatically and practically, to the Hormuz agreement, which is a complex one, though I remain optimistic. Lebanon is also an area where Italy can make an important contribution. One of the issues I want to discuss with Macron is the possibility of working together ."
"I don't see any risk of a backlash in US-Italy relations," he stressed. "Our relations are good both economically and institutionally. They are two systems with such a solid history of cooperation that it can't be erased by a social media discussion. These relationships don't begin and end with who governs. The terms of foreign policy must remain high. Sometimes we talk about foreign policy as if it were Temptation Island."
