Two spouses aged 81 and 83 died this afternoon following a fire that broke out in their home in Bagno a Ripoli (Florence), in via Roma.

The firefighters intervened on site around 6.15pm and entered the apartment, filled with smoke and with some rooms where the flames were still active , extracting the two people, who were later declared dead by the 118 doctor who intervened. .

The two elderly people lived alone with the help of a caregiver who was not at home at the time. The flames apparently started from a short circuit in an electric armchair . The fire immediately engulfed the woman who, being a disabled person, was unable to escape. Her husband tried in vain to save her, ending up dying too .

The couple was well known in the small hamlet of Bagno a Ripoli having run a shop for years. A year ago his son died .

In addition to the firefighters and 118, the mayor Francesco Casini, the carabinieri and the municipal police also intervened on site.
