Amedeo Grisi, 49, a singer from Sanremo who for seven years fought against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) died on the day of the "no" to the referendum on euthanasia decided by the Constitutional Court .

Last August he decided to stop treatment, saying he preferred to stop breathing rather than having a tube in his throat and others in his stomach, to survive "who knows, maybe a couple of more years".

He explained why on social media: "We with ALS are allowed to decide whether to 'go ahead' by doing a tracheotomy, which would mean a tube in the throat and other tubes in the stomach to be fed, nailed to a bed and with an expectation two years of life in hell. The other possibility is to stop and undergo euthanasia. I chose the second because the first does not belong to me and because the desire is to go back to being free ".

"I have not planned day and month to undergo euthanasia. But the day I am seized by a respiratory crisis I will stop. My time is now up - he added -. Will it be a month, two, a week? I am ready. sure that for someone, more than one, I will never really go away. The power of music and love makes us immortal. "

In January 2018, in the former oratory of Santa Brigida in the historic center of Sanremo, Grisi managed to duet with Claudio Baglioni, artistic director of the 68th Festival at the time, crowning his great dream. In November of the same year he announced: "I am fighting for my voice. I have been having serious problems for a month, I do not breathe very well and I cannot sing. For two years I have stopped playing the guitar, beloved travel companion."
