Tragedy struck in the Salento countryside on the border between Nardò and Porto Cesareo. A 72-year-old man, Giuseppe Pampo, from Leverano, died after being mauled by two rottweilers.
The man had gone into the countryside to pick fruit. His son and grandson, worried when he hadn't returned home for lunch, went looking for him, only to find him lifeless with his two dogs on top of him.
They tried to free the body from the two animals, risking being mauled themselves. The two mastiffs may have escaped from a nearby home. The Carabinieri are tracking down the dogs' owners.
