Silvano Girotto, known as "Frate Mitra", died in Turin.

Former legionary and former Franciscan friar, he was originally from Caselle Torinese and was 83 years old.

When he was in Latin America he had fought in Chile and was one of the opponents of the dictator Augusto Pinochet.

In Italy, however, he had approached the Red Brigades, without joining them, and collaborated with the carabinieri in the capture of Renato Curcio and Alberto Franceschini, founders and historical leaders of the terrorist organization. Following those arrests, “Frate Mitra” had renounced all forms of protection and in 1978 he spontaneously testified against the Red Brigades in the trial in Turin. He was married to a Bolivian woman and had two daughters.
