Elderly Woman Kills Alzheimer's Suffering Husband, Attempts to Take Her Own Life

An 82-year-old woman killed her husband with a knife, then allegedly attempted to take her own life with the same weapon but failed.
This is what the Carabinieri reconstructed for an incident dating back to yesterday evening in a house in Mercatale di Vernio, in the province of Prato.
The man, the same age as his wife, suffered from Alzheimer's. The woman is now hospitalized at Santo Stefano hospital, where a wound to her neck was stitched and she is under close observation after a psychiatric visit.
The Carabinieri are investigating the incident, coordinated by the prosecutor's office, which has opened a file.
The reasons that triggered the woman's action are not yet clear, perhaps exasperation over her husband's serious illness and issues related to health care.
