Raul Esteban Calderon, accused of the murder of Fabrizio Piscitelli , known as Diabolik , was acquitted on appeal. The judges of the Rome Court of Appeal overturned his first-instance life sentence.

The judges dropped the charges against the defendant with the formula "for not having committed the crime".

Piscitelli was killed by a gunshot to the head on August 7, 2019, in the Acquedotti park. For Calderon—who attended the reading of the sentence via video link from Cagliari , where he is serving a previous 12-year sentence—the Attorney General's Office had requested confirmation of the life sentence but also recognition of the aggravating circumstance of mafia methods.
