The weekly growth of new cases of Covid-19 in Italy slows down, reaching over 728 thousand (+ 22.4% compared to 595,300 the previous week), but the number of deaths continues to grow : 692 in the last 7 days ( + 49% compared to 464 in the previous survey ). These are the data from the Gimbe Foundation monitoring for the period 6-12 July. "The increase in new cases - explains the president Nino Cartabellotta - records the lowest value since the inversion of the curve took place in mid-June. The peak is reached, but the duration of the plateau and the subsequent descent of the curve could be very slow ".

IN SARDINIA - Slowly (+ 14.5%) but constantly growing Covid in the island, where, in the week 6-12 July, there is a worsening performance for cases currently positive per 100,000 inhabitants (2,392 compared to 11,959 in the previous survey).

The ranking of the incidence is always guided by the Metropolitan City of Cagliari with a value equal to 1,295 (+ 1.9% compared to the previous week), but now all the territories show an index that is higher than 1000 new cases per 100 thousand inhabitants with a more conspicuous increase in the center-north of the island: Oristano 1,274 (+ 18.2%), South Sardinia 1,209 (+ 5.8%), Sassari 1,095 (+ 30.1%) and Nuoro 1,093 (+33.8 %)

The percentage of beds in the medical area (9.8%) occupied by Covid-19 patients continues to remain below the national average; while employment in intensive care is above the national average (4.4%).

On the vaccine front , the percentage of the population over 5 years that has not received any dose of vaccine is equal to 8% in Sardinia (Italy average 7.3%) to which the over 5 year population is temporarily protected, as it is cured of Covid. -19 less than 180 days, equal to 3.8%. The percentage of the over 5-year-old population that has not received the third dose of vaccine is 9.4% (Italian average 11.2%) to which the over-5-year-old population healed for less than 120 days, which cannot receive the third dose immediately, equal to 6.4%.

The vaccination coverage rate with fourth dose for immunocompromised people is 62.4%, while for over 80, RSA guests and frail 60-79 people it is 9.4%. Finally, pediatric vaccines: the 5-11 population that completed the cycle is 43.3% (Italy average 34.9%) to which a further 4.3% (Italy average 3.3%) must be added only with the first dose.

IN ITALY - According to the monitoring of the Gimbe Foundation , in the week under consideration, all the Regions recorded a percentage increase in new cases . The incidence also exceeds 500 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in all provinces, of which 62 register 1,000 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Hand in hand with the spread of infections, there is also an increase in the number of swabs carried out, both antigenic and molecular: in fact, they went from 2,152,065 in the week of 29 June -5 July to 2,517,540 in the week 6-12 July, equal to + 17%. But, as with regard to infections, this increase is also lower than that recorded a week ago (+ 33%).

Finally, with regard to reinfections, Gimbe recalls that according to the latest report from the Istituto Superiore di Sanità, over 659 thousand reinfections were recorded in Italy in the period 24 August 2021-6 July 2022, equal to 4.6% of the total number of cases. .

With regard to the pressure on hospitals , from 6 to 12 July hospitalized patients with Covid symptoms in medical wards increased by 21.5% (9,724 compared to 8,003 the previous week), while those in intensive care increased by 16.1% (375 compared to 323). The increase is lower than that of the previous 7 days (33% for ordinary hospitalizations and 36% for intensive care) but, added to that of the past few weeks, it means that in the last month the hospitalizations in intensive care have doubled, going from 183 on 12. June to 375 on 12 July, while in the medical area they more than doubled, from 4,076 to 9,724.

"In the coming weeks - explains Nino Cartabellotta - we must expect a further increase in hospital admissions and deaths : this makes the idea of free circulation of the virus completely unacceptable. Moreover, he adds," this 'strategy' does not take into account the impact of long Covid, the incidence of which is related to the number of infections. Finally, an uncontrolled circulation of a virus as contagious as Omicron 5 risks causing a real paralysis of various services ”.
