The young man arrested by the Carabinieri for attempting to undermine transport safety and disrupting public service last night in Castel San Pietro , in the Bologna area, is a 20-year-old from Imola , who works as an office worker and has no criminal record . According to the reconstruction by the Carabinieri, the intervention began with a call to 112 from a citizen reporting the presence of a young man crouching near the Ancona-Piacenza railway line.
Upon arrival of the 17510 regional high-speed train, departing from Imola and headed for Bologna, the resident heard a bang and saw a cloud of dust that suggested the train had struck something on the tracks . There had indeed been an impact, with some rocks on the track , which forced the train to stop for safety checks , resulting in a half-hour delay and the slowing of all passing trains.
The arrival of the Carabinieri was a godsend: the saboteur, rather than flee, apparently decided to double down by placing approximately 30 rocks on each track, attempting a second attack, which was foiled by the same officers. The patrols stopped the young man as he was trying to escape on a bicycle, while also working on the tracks to remove the rocks, thus avoiding a collision with an oncoming Frecciarossa train. The twenty-year-old was taken to the police station and then transferred to prison, as ordered by the Bologna Public Prosecutor's Office, which is coordinating the investigation.
