The runway at Bergamo airport, Orio al Serio, was reopened yesterday evening around 7:30 pm. This was announced by Sacbo, the management company of the Bergamo airport. Operations have resumed regularly , although there are still many passengers waiting to be relocated to new flights .

The airport, the third largest in Italy after Fiumicino and Malpensa, had been closed due to the runway being damaged by the explosion, yesterday morning around 8am, of the rear tyres of a Ryanair Boeing during landing.

The runway - Sacbo recalls - "has been closed since 8 am because it was made unusable for a length of 450 metres by the explosion of the four tyres of the rear landing gear during the landing of Ryanair flight FR 846, coming from Barcelona El Prat. No consequences for the 161 passengers and crew members".

The pavement restoration works were carried out after the removal of the aircraft that had remained stationary on the runway and thanks to the intervention of specialized technicians with the supervision of Sacbo personnel and the Fire Brigade.

The pavement was then milled, asphalted and the horizontal road markings restored , followed by runway acceptance tests which allowed flight operations to resume.

"In just over six hours, a job was done that would normally take much longer," emphasized Giovanni Sanga, president of Sacbo. "An excellent team effort, which began with the immediate intervention of the Fire Brigade and the contribution of Sacbo's technical and operational staff, as well as the specialized companies in charge. Our solidarity and thanks for their understanding go to the waiting passengers, many of whom had to give up their trip. Special recognition for the assistance work carried out by the staff of the handling companies at the airport. A sense of gratitude to the Police Forces present at the airport and to those who carry out their work in airport services."
