The 23-year-old arrested yesterday for the machete attack against a young man which took place on Monday evening in the Mirafiori district of Turin is accused of attempted murder.

The suspect, Pietro Costanzia di Costigliole, originally from Milan, was heard by the public prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Mario Bendoni, in the presence of two defense lawyers and claimed to be completely unaware of the episode. When he was stopped by the police it seems that he was convinced that it was the execution of a measure from the Iberian judicial authority, given that he had stayed in Spain for a certain period.

The agents of the Flying Squad were on his trail immediately after the wounding of the 24-year-old who is still hospitalized at the CTO in serious conditions. He underwent an operation that lasted over four hours in which surgeons had to amputate his left leg, which was seriously damaged due to the blows he received. Already upon his arrival at the hospital, the limb was amputated below the knee and, also due to a large blood loss, the young man's condition worsened. He is now in a reserved prognosis, intubated in intensive care.

The attack occurred while he was with his girlfriend on a scooter, in via Panizza. The two, according to what was reconstructed through testimonies, were approached by a T-Max scooter, with two people on board with distorted faces. The passenger allegedly got out holding the machete, hitting the 24-year-old. Then he got back on the scooter which sped away. The young man was immediately helped by passers-by, including a worker and two off-duty carabinieri, who also tried to stop the bleeding with the help of a belt. While the girl who was with the victim called 112.

The police investigations focused on the friendships and places frequented by the victim, who lives with her grandmother in the Santa Rita neighborhood, not too far from Mirafiori Nord.
