The Chamber approved the bill that introduces a restriction on wiretapping, in the text already approved by the Senate. The measure is therefore law, which only needs promulgation. The votes in favor were 147, the votes against 67, one abstention.

The decree sets a time limit for "listening" at 45 days, extendable only "in cases where the absolute necessity of the operations for a longer duration is justified by the emergence of specific and concrete elements". And

such "concrete elements" must be "subject to express justification". Only crimes of terrorism and organised crime are not included in this "ceiling".

The opposition and the magistrates, however, protest. "This is a very serious mistake," comments the Democratic Party group leader in the Justice Commission, Federico Gianassi, "because it brings down an unprecedented axe on wiretaps even in the case of very serious crimes such as murder."

The Deputy Minister of Justice Francesco Paolo Sisto has the opposite opinion and defends the provision, explaining that it "does not limit in any way the needs of the investigations" because "the wiretaps can be regularly ordered, but they must have a strengthened motivation".
