The carabinieri of the Compagnia di Rende arrested a 50-year-old man, Maurizio Mirko Abate , a former traffic police officer, on suspicion of killing a 22-year-old girl in 2005 in Montalto Uffugo, Cosentino, by suffocating her with a pillow. , Lisa Gabriele , with whom, despite being married, he had an affair.

The investigations into Abate's account, archived in 2009, were reopened on the basis of an anonymous complaint sent to the Public Prosecutor's Office of Cosenza.

The letter reported some details of the affair known only to the investigators. In this way, further documentary acquisitions were carried out, a long series of telephone and environmental interceptions, consulted numerous people informed about the facts and acquired new medical legal advice through the exhumation of Lisa Gabriele's body.

"The results of this new investigative phase, assessed as a whole - let the carabinieri know - made it possible to verify, in greater depth, what was collected in the first phase, filling some investigative gaps and bringing out a significantly serious circumstantial picture that connects the crime contested against the person of the suspect. What was globally acquired on the investigative level allowed the investigating and judging magistracy to evaluate the evidence collected as convergent, serious, univocal and coherent and not refuted by plausible alternative reconstructions, suitable to found a qualified judgment probability on the accountability of the suspect ".

The former policeman is accused of voluntary murder, aggravated by premeditation .
