The 54-year-old Genoese man whose car struck and killed Fulvia Minetti, 72, this morning on Via Borgoratti in Genoa, is under investigation for vehicular homicide.

The man, who tested negative for alcohol, had parked his car in a no-parking zone on the opposite side of the road in front of a bar. But the Volkswagen Polo suddenly reversed while the man was inside the bar, gaining speed down the hill until it crashed into the shutter of a still-closed pharmacy where the woman, who lived nearby, was passing.

The car, which was found by officers with the handbrake on, was seized. The investigation, coordinated by prosecutor Francesco Cardona and entrusted to the local police accident unit, will determine whether the handbrake actually failed due to a technical fault or whether the owner was at fault.
