The police arrested two alleged smugglers who are believed to be linked to the sinking of a boat loaded with migrants which on 12 July left some missing persons and the death of a 4-year-old boy.

The group had been rescued by the Coast Guard ship Dattilo while it was traveling to transport 500 people from the Lampedusa hotspot to Reggio Calabria but for the baby, who was with his mother, there had been nothing they could do, it had been recovered lifeless.

Now the Reggio Calabria flying squad has arrested two young people from Sierra Leone, aged 20 and 19, for aiding and abetting illegal immigration and who have died as a result of the same crime.

According to what was told by the migrants to the investigators, the small boat driven by the two young men had left on 11 July from the city of Sfax, in Tunisia. After a day of navigation, due to the worsening sea and weather conditions, the migrants had asked a fishing boat for help but, in an attempt to tranship, their boat capsized causing the death of the child and the disappearance of 7 other people, 3 adults and 4 other minors.
