The Italian Tricolour was officially born on 7 January 1797. "Today marks the 229th anniversary of the birth of the Tricolour , the symbol of our homeland." This was stated by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella , in a statement. "The Tricolour flew with the push of revolutionary winds in the Cispadane Republic in 1797. Subsequently, it passed through the epic period of the Risorgimento, becoming the flag of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Chosen by the Constituent Assembly as the banner of the new State, it today embodies the lofty values set forth in the Constitutional Charter: unity, freedom, democracy, and the country's social cohesion ."
"The emblem of the Republic," President Mattarella continued, "is an element that distinguishes Italian identity everywhere and in every context , from peacekeeping missions by our Armed Forces to diplomatic missions abroad , to sporting competitions . All Italians look upon our flag with love and respect : it reflects our common history and the foundations of our civilization , and it represents our national community. Long live the Tricolour, long live the Republic ."
