Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has initiated a major reorganization at the top levels of state-owned companies implicated in the recent corruption scandal that has rocked the country's energy sector. The decision comes while the head of state is visiting Greece, but it follows hours of intense political and judicial pressure.
“This morning we have already held an online meeting with Prime Minister of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko on further decisions aimed at cleaning up and reviving the management of the energy sector and related institutions,” Zelensky announced in a message published on X.
The president then instructed the government to submit to the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, an urgent bill to renew the composition of the National Commission for Regulation of Energy and Utilities.
This intervention is part of a broader process of reviewing and replacing the key figures overseeing energy assets.
The plan also includes replacing the heads of the State Inspectorate for Nuclear Regulation and the State Inspectorate for Energy Supervision, as well as nominating a new head of the State Property Fund of Ukraine.
"In full coordination with law enforcement and anti-corruption agencies," Zelensky added, "we will ensure the renewal of the Asset Recovery and Management Agency," the body that oversees assets seized in corruption cases. The president also urged the rapid conclusion of the competition for the new director of the Carabinieri, with the goal of completing the selection process by the end of the year.
