American President Joe Biden would have "secretly" authorized Ukraine to strike on Russian territory with US weapons, but only in the area near Kharkiv and not at long range.
The indiscretion was published exclusively by Politico, which cites informed sources.
In response, Russia, through Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov , has threatened to adopt "measures in the field of nuclear deterrence" if the US deploys medium- and short-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
«The allies expect that the use of weapons supplied to Ukraine against Russia to also strike military targets beyond the border will be carried out «in line with international law and in a responsible manner» , instead stated the secretary general of Born Jens Stoltenberg . As for the risk of escalation, Stoltenberg specified: "Every time we gave resources to Ukraine, Vladimir Putin threatened us, it was the same with artillery pieces, tanks, missiles, F-16s." And again: «It is Russia that started the escalation, first by invading another country and now by opening the new front in Kharkiv», underlined the secretary of the Alliance.
Meanwhile, according to the Financial Times, the United States is close to signing a "bilateral security pact" with Ukraine and that the agreement will be signed by Biden and Kiev leader Volodymyr Zelensky in Italy on the sidelines of the G7 in Borgo Egnazia , on the eve of the peace summit of 15-16 June in Switzerland.
