Twelve employees of UNRWA - the United Nations agency for the rescue of Palestinian refugees - were allegedly involved in the attacks by Hamas militiamen in Israel last October 7, attacks which triggered the reaction of the Jewish State and the offensive, which still continues, in the Gaza Strip.

«The Israeli authorities have provided UNRWA with information on the alleged involvement of several employees in the terrible attacks of 7 October. To protect the agency's ability to provide humanitarian assistance, I have made the decision to immediately terminate the contracts of these members and launch an investigation to establish the truth without delay. Any employee involved in acts of terrorism will be held responsible, including through criminal proceedings", declared UNRWA Commissioner General Philippe Lazzarini, reiterating his condemnation of the Hamas attacks and speaking of "shocking accusations".

Upon hearing the news, the USA and Canada immediately decided to suspend funding to the Agency, followed closely by many allies, including Italy, while the Israeli government asked the UN to "take immediate action against the UNRWA leadership". .
