Two death sentences have been carried out in these hours in Alabama and Texas.

In the first state, Casey McWhorter, 49, was pronounced dead at 6:56 pm local time, according to state authorities. The sentence dates back to 1994, after he was found to have murdered the father of one of his friends, Edward Lee Williams, who was killed with a firearm after the man had surprised them while they ransacked his house together with a third teenager. McWhorter was 18 at the time of the accident, the other two were 16 and 15.

In Texas, David Renteria, 53, was executed for the 2001 kidnapping outside a hypermarket and then murder of a 5-year-old girl, Alexandra Flores. He said he was forced under threat by a gang to kidnap the little girl and denied being her killer. He was pronounced dead on Thursday at 7.11pm local time, according to a press release from Texas authorities.

The latter two bring the number of executions that have taken place in the US in 2023 to 23, including eight in Texas and two in Alabama, all carried out by lethal injection.
