«The Pope uses the term white flag, and responds by taking up the image proposed by the interviewer, to indicate with it the cessation of hostilities, the truce reached with the courage of negotiation. Elsewhere in the interview, speaking of another conflict situation, but referring to every war situation, the Pope clearly stated: 'negotiation is never a surrender'.

This was stated by the director of the Vatican press office, Matteo Bruni, specifying the terms of the interview granted by Francis to Swiss Radio TV.

The Pope's hope «remains the one always repeated in recent years, and recently repeated on the occasion of the second anniversary of the conflict: "While I renew my deepest affection for the tormented Ukrainian people and pray for everyone, in particular for the numerous innocent victims, I beg that that bit of humanity is found that allows us to create the conditions for a diplomatic solution in search of a just and lasting peace"", concludes Bruni's note.
