The International Criminal Court does not back down: «Putin can be tried, as happened to Milosevic»
President Khan to CNN: «It could end up in the courtrooms, even if Moscow is out of the treaty that established the ICC»Russian President Vladimir Putin can be tried for alleged war crimes like the Nazis, former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic or former Liberian leader Charles Taylor.
The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court Karim Khan is convinced of this.
Yesterday the news of the arrest warrant against Putin for an alleged plan to deport Ukrainian children to Russia.
Moscow claims it is not subject to the Court's decisions. But for Khan it is not like this, on the contrary: the number one of the ICC recalled how apparently untouchable figures had to face justice: "They were all powerful individuals, yet they found themselves in the courtrooms", he said.
However , it is true that Moscow is among those countries that have not signed the treaty that established the Court . For this reason it is highly unlikely that Putin will be handed over to the jurisdiction of the court . However, the move by the ICC has already made history: Putin is the first head of state of a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for whom an arrest warrant has been issued.
