There are 49 migrants on board the Cassiopea patrol vessel of the Italian Navy that arrived this morning at the port of Shengjin , in Albania . On board are Bangladeshis (mostly), Egyptians, Ivorians and Gambians, rescued over the weekend in international waters south of Lampedusa, who will now be subjected to the accelerated border procedures provided for those coming from safe countries and who have not handed over identity documents .

In the “Italian” hotspot of Shengjin, asylum seekers will be identified and undergo a thorough medical screening (if conditions of vulnerability are found, they will be taken to Italy, as happened in some cases in the two previous transfers to Albania, last October and November). They will then be transferred to the other center under our jurisdiction, the one in Gjader, about twenty kilometers away, on the basis of the detention ordered by the police chief of Rome.

Within 48 hours , the judges of the Court of Appeal of the Capital will have to decide whether or not to validate the detention . The response should arrive by Thursday. On other occasions, the magistrates have suspended the validation for all the migrants detained , who were then taken to Italy.
