The president of Ecuador , Daniel Noboa , declared a state of emergency throughout the country , including in the penitentiary system, after the escape of public enemy no. 1, Adolfo Macias , alias "Fito", leader of the largest gang of drug trafficking, and after the riots in some prisons.

“I have just signed the decree on the state of emergency so that the police have all the political and legal support in their actions,” Noboa announced on Instagram.

The army is thus authorized to maintain public order in the streets and prisons of the country where a night curfew has also been imposed between 11pm and 5am local time .

Adolfo Macias was sentenced to 34 years in prison in 2011 for various crimes, including drug trafficking and murder.
