The National Assembly in Seoul has approved a motion to impeach President Yoon Suk-yeol , who has come under fire for his botched attempt to impose martial law , which was declared on December 3 and withdrawn six hours later following parliamentary rejection.

The motion, promoted by the opposition, passed on its second attempt after a stalemate last Saturday. This time , the 108 deputies of Yoon's ruling People Power Party took part in the vote , with several voting in favor, allowing the assembly to reach the two-thirds quorum (200 out of a total of 300).

Celebrations in the streets, with singing and dancing, for the tens of thousands of protesters who had gathered in front of the National Assembly in a peaceful atmosphere, with people who had distributed free newspapers and hot packs during the night to help them resist the cold and sub-zero temperatures.
