First institutional summit meetings for the new German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who after his official appointment to the Bundestag on 8 December last flew to Paris to meet the French President Emmanuel Macron.

A meeting at the end of which the two leaders underlined a "solid convergence of views".

Between Scholz and Macron unity of purpose above all for a more united Europe, from an economic point of view and beyond. The "growth and" solidity of finances are not incompatible, "said Scholz, at a press conference in Paris.

For his part, Macron, who will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union in January,

he explained that he intends to "rethink" the budgetary rules of the Union to create a Europe more oriented towards investments and growth.

Then Scholz flew to Brussels to meet the president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

"The EU Commission is open to a very strong collaboration with the new Germany", said von der Leyen after the face to face. "Germany has always played an important role in shaping the Union", he added, underlining that Scholz's visit to Brussels, one of the first since taking office, is precisely the testimony of "how much the EU matters" to Germany.
