Cali Mayor Alejandro Eder has declared a curfew and ordered the militarization of some areas due to warnings of possible looting following the earthquake that struck the city. Official deaths in the country are just under 200, but the toll is expected to rise, and widespread massacres are feared.

The restriction imposed by the mayor is in effect from 8:00 PM on August 10, 2026, and will end at 6:00 AM local time on Tuesday. The measure was taken to protect the civilian population and allow emergency teams to focus on relief efforts. Police and army will patrol the areas most damaged by the earthquake, while hospitals have been placed on red alert and a state of public disaster has been declared.

"We have warnings and threats of looting in various parts of the city. Right now, our priority is to protect citizens and ensure that rescuers can continue their post-earthquake rescue operations," Eder told X.

The mayor reiterated the need not to hinder rescue efforts: "Citizens of Cali: these first 48 hours are critical. We need rescuers to be able to work and reach those still trapped."

Finally, he launched an appeal for solidarity, confirming that donations continue to be collected at the Plazoleta Jairo Varela and through the Red Cross.
