Olaf Scholz failed to win a vote of confidence in the Bundestag, paving the way for early elections in February. The chancellor received 207 votes in favor, 394 against. 116 abstained. To win a vote of confidence, he would have had to collect at least 366 votes.

Scholz immediately afterwards went to Bellevue Castle in Berlin to meet with the President of the Republic, Frank Walter Steinmeier, as required by procedure, and to request the dissolution of the Chamber of Deputies.

The news, after the crisis that opened at the beginning of November, was expected: Scholz's goal was precisely to pave the way for early elections in Germany, scheduled for February 23.
