Marina Ovsyannikova, the Russian journalist who last year protested live on state television against Russia's large-scale military intervention in Ukraine, has been sentenced to eight years and six months in prison in absentia .

Ovsyannikova, 45, fled Russia, where she was under house arrest, with her daughter and is now in France.

The former editor of Channel One had become famous throughout the world for having burst into a news broadcast with a sign reading "Stop the war" and "You are being lied to".

The Russian Prosecutor's Office had requested a nine-and-a-half year prison sentence for spreading "fake news" , i.e. any information about the war in Ukraine that conflicts with the official narrative.
