Vladimir Putin's Russia confirms that it increasingly wants to assume the role of bastion of traditional values in opposition to what it presents as Western decadence. The Ministry of Justice announced that it had asked the Supreme Court to outlaw in the country what is called "the public international LGBT movement", without clarifying which organizations and initiatives are specifically being targeted.

According to the ministry, the activities of the LGBT movement in Russia present elements of "extremism", in particular "incitement to social and religious hatred".

The Supreme Court will consider the request at a hearing set for November 30. On that occasion the contours of the initiative should be clarified. That is, whether the objective is the closure of specific groups or organizations or whether the definition will remain vague, with the possibility therefore that the LGBT community in general will be targeted. The accusation of extremism has been leveled at many organizations, activists and opponents in Russia to block their work, especially since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine.
