Pope Leo and King Charles pray together in the Sistine Chapel: "A historic moment."
For the first time in five centuries, Camilla was present at the service alongside her husband, the head of the Anglican Church.Pope Leo XIV and King Charles, head of the Anglican Church, pray together in the Sistine Chapel. A historic moment, not seen in five centuries, since the Anglican Reformation.
The prayer – in which Camilla also participated, alongside Charles – was led by Pope Leo and the Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell, while the singing of the psalms was entrusted to the Sistine Chapel Choir, with the choir of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle and the children's choir of the Royal Chapel at St. James's Palace.
Peace, poverty, and the environment were among the topics of the British royals' state visit to the Vatican. After meeting with the Pope, Charles III met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State.
During the cordial discussions at the Secretariat of State, while expressing appreciation for the existing good bilateral relations, there was an exchange of views on several issues of mutual interest, such as—as stated in a statement—environmental protection and the fight against poverty. Particular attention was paid to the shared commitment to promoting peace and security in the face of global challenges. Finally, recalling the history of the Church in the United Kingdom, there was a joint reflection on the need to continue promoting ecumenical dialogue.
