New grip of the Taliban: no universities for women
After the closure of the girls' schools and the imposition of the full veil, another order arrivesWomen in Afghanistan will not be able to attend universities . And this "until further notice". It is the Taliban's new squeeze on freedom that is affecting the world of education.
“You are all informed to implement the aforementioned order to suspend women's education,” Neda Mohammad Nadim, minister of higher education, former governor and military commander, and religious hardliner, wrote in a letter.
Since their arrival in power, the Taliban , after effectively preventing women from working, ordered the closure of girls' schools last March , pending new directives in accordance with Islamic law. Directives that have never actually been issued, not to mention the fact that without having attended high school it is in fact impossible to enter university.
Then came the decree of the supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhunzada, on May 7 , who imposed the full veil , which must leave only the eyes uncovered (when it is not a question of the burqa, which also covers those) when a woman is outside her home . It remains to be seen whether the Afghans will now accept without protest the formalization of what had in fact already been decided.
