The EU Commission is accelerating on migration and is proposing to speed up the implementation of some aspects of the Pact, which is scheduled to enter into force in June 2026. In particular, the EU executive is proposing to bring forward two key elements of the regulation on the asylum procedure, with the aim of helping Member States "to process asylum applications from applicants that may be unfounded more quickly and efficiently". Furthermore, Brussels is proposing a list of safe countries at EU level and derogations "for clearly identifiable regions or categories of individuals".

Seven countries have been identified as safe at the moment: Kosovo, Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Morocco and Tunisia.

"I welcome with great satisfaction - commented Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni - the proposal for a EU list of safe countries of origin presented by the European Commission and which includes, among others, Bangladesh, Egypt and Tunisia". Meloni defines, in a post on social media, "equally positive is the proposal to anticipate the entry into force of some components of the Migration and Asylum Pact, in particular the possibility of designating safe countries of origin with territorial exceptions and for certain categories and of applying the 20% criterion".
