Mark Rutte will be the next Secretary General of NATO in place of the outgoing Jens Stoltenberg.

The former Dutch prime minister today received the support of Romania, the last country missing, after the support of Hungary and Slovakia had already arrived on Tuesday.

Today the decisive turning point with the decision of Romanian president Klaus Iohannis to withdraw his candidacy for the summit of the transatlantic organization.

During a meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense, Iohannis said he had informed NATO allies of the withdrawal of his candidacy.

Rutte will officially assume his new position on October 2, approximately a month before the US presidential elections.

The appointment of Mark Rutte as general secretary of NATO "will not change anything" in the politics of the Alliance, which is "decided by the USA", is the comment on the news by the spokeswoman of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, in an interview with Radio Sputnik.
