Maddie McCann's prime suspect released: "There's a lack of evidence."
Christian Brückner has served time for rape in another case and investigators have no evidence to charge him with the disappearance of the little girl, which occurred in 2007.Christian Brückner, the prime suspect in the 2007 disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann in Portugal, has been released from prison in Germany after serving a sentence for rape in a separate case.
German prosecutor Christian Wolters, who was unable to prevent the release due to insufficient evidence to warrant further indictment, expressed concern in a recent interview with AFP about the release of an individual he called "fundamentally dangerous."
Brückner has just completed a seven-and-a-half-year sentence for raping an American tourist in Portugal in 2005. Upon his release from prison, he immediately jumped into his lawyer's car, as reported by the German newspaper Bild.
Since 2020, the Braunschweig police and prosecutor's office have believed he may be directly involved in the disappearance of Maddie, who was three years old at the time. For this reason, new investigations have been ordered in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in recent months. However, there is currently no concrete evidence to support charges.
Brueckner is now a free man, although investigators managed to seize his passport, forcing him not to leave Germany. According to Bild, he will also be required to wear an electronic bracelet.
