The 25-year prison sentence for Luigi Giacomo Passeri, the 32-year-old from Pescara arrested in August 2023 in Egypt – where he was on holiday – for international drug trafficking, was confirmed on appeal.

The young man, father Italian and mother from Sierra Leone, has been living in London for some time. According to family members, he was found in possession of small doses of drugs .

In recent months, the family had raised the alarm about the conditions of the young man, who had started a hunger strike to protest against the treatment he received in prison and the lengthy proceedings.

After his arrest, Passeri underwent surgery for acute appendicitis and subsequently did not receive adequate care.

A video conference meeting between the family, Passeri's lawyer and embassy officials is scheduled for Sunday, during which further information on the second-instance sentence will be available.
