According to police, more than two thousand protesters gathered in central Athens this evening to protest US Secretary of State Marco Rubio's visit to Greece.

Syntagma Square, in front of Parliament, was closed to traffic, while thousands of police officers were mobilized due to increased security measures in the Greek capital, according to AFP photographers on the scene.

The demonstrations were called by PAME (a trade union linked to the Greek Communist Party, KKE) and other student and left-wing groups. "Rubio is not welcome; the US-NATO-EU murderers must stay out of the country and the region!" This was the message echoed in calls for demonstrations spread across social media.
