The execution of the Fort Hood shooter will be public, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced.

Nidal Hasan "will face a firing squad of soldiers , as is right, and we will make sure that people can witness it, that it is public because people need to understand that there are serious consequences for this kind of thing ," the Pentagon chief emphasized.

A public execution has not been carried out in the United States for 90 years. It's unclear whether Hegseth was referring to an audience or whether it will be broadcast on social media or television. However, American media have reported that the execution by firing squad will be livestreamed in early December.

The Fort Hood massacre dates back to November 5, 2009 , when Hasan – a former US Army major – opened fire inside a military base, killing 13 people, including 12 soldiers, and wounding 32 others.
