The jewels were on display in the display cases dedicated to Napoleon and the French sovereigns in the Apollon Gallery. One of the jewels was reportedly found outside the museum. It was the crown of Empress Eugénie, which was damaged.
Following the incident, the museum – the most visited in the world – announced it would be closed for the whole day on Sunday.
"A robbery occurred at the opening this morning," French Culture Minister Rachida Dati wrote on social media. "No one was injured. The investigation is ongoing."
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez called the gang's loot "priceless jewels."
